Limited dust entry may occur, but it should not interfere with normal operation.

EV charger protection ratings explained
Understand what IP and NEMA enclosure ratings mean—and why mounting, seals, cable routing and connection condition still matter.
Read the test category before judging the installation
The “X” means that digit has not been specified in the reference. These descriptions explain general test categories—not product-specific claims.

A rating describes a test—not every real-world situation
Water direction, exposure time, mounting position and enclosure condition all affect a charging installation. A higher number does not automatically make a product suitable for every location.
- Use only the exact rating shown in approved product documentation.
- Keep connections away from standing water, snow buildup and physical impact.
- Follow the product manual and local electrical-code requirements.
Small details protect the complete charging path
Enclosure seams, cable glands, connector fit and routing work together. A loose fitting, damaged seal, open cover or low point where water collects can reduce protection.
- Check seals and cable jackets for cuts, deformation or aging.
- Seat the connector fully and store it in its holder after charging.
- Route the cable away from tires, doors, sharp edges and trip paths.

Four checks before everyday use
A suitable location and a sound electrical installation are as important as the enclosure itself.
Common enclosure types in plain language
NEMA and IP are different classification systems. Do not assume a direct equivalent without verified manufacturer documentation.
NEMA 3 / 3R
Outdoor protection categories covering rain, sleet and snow, with differences in dust-related provisions.
NEMA 4
Indoor or outdoor protection that includes rain, splashing and hose-directed water.
NEMA 4X
Adds corrosion-resistance provisions to the NEMA 4 protection category.
NEMA 6 / 6P
Includes protection during temporary or prolonged limited-depth submersion under defined conditions.
Protection rating FAQ
VOLGOO displays a specific rating only when supported by approved product documentation. Contact us if a product page does not show the rating you need.
Does a higher IP number always mean a better charger?
No. The code describes specific solid- and water-ingress tests. Suitability also depends on location, temperature, corrosion exposure, installation and the manufacturer's stated operating conditions.
Are IP and NEMA ratings interchangeable?
No. They are separate systems and cover different criteria. Some categories may be broadly comparable, but they are not direct substitutes.
Can a weather-rated connector be left on the ground?
It should be stored in its holder and kept away from standing water, vehicle traffic and other physical damage. Always follow the product manual.
